Clinical experiences of septoplasty

Abstract
Nasal septal deviation is a common cause of nasal stuffiness and is corrected by septoplasty nowadays.
The author analyzed to investigate the results of septoplasty from 133 patients who complained of nasal and associated symptoms for evaluation of usefulness of septoplasty since Jan. 1993 to Dec. 1993.
Male to female ratio was 3.4:1. Nasal septal deviations were found more frequently on the left side than on the right side by the ratio of 3:2.
Major symptoms for septoplasty were nasal stuffiness(88.0%), rhinorrhea(55.6%) and postnasal drip(39.1%). Common concomitant diseases were nasal septal deviation with chronic hypertrophic rhinitis(40.0%), paranasal sinusitis(24.1%) and allergic
rhinitis(6.7%). Common combined surgical types with septoplasty were turbinate surgery(41.0%), paranasal sinus surgery(25.6%) and rhinoplasty(5.3%).
Postoperative improvement rate of symptoms after septoplasty with combine nasosinus surgery were 86.4% in nasal stuffiness, 84.6% in postnasal drip and 69.0% in rhinorrhea.
Postoperative complications were 1 case of saddle nose(0.8%) and 2 cases of nasal septal perforation(1.5%).
So, septoplasty is a useful technique for correction of nasal septum associated with nasal symptoms.
